Fugitive Caught After 30 Years on the Run

Forward written by Hugh Collins
Ian Jackson MacDonald spent three decades on the lam after faking a heart attack and escaping a prison hospital. Now authorities say they've captured the 71-year-old in rural Florida.

"I was told that he just let out a big sigh and said, 'Yeah, you're right -- you got me.”
The rest of this commentary is from DOOM.
I wonder just how many man hours and dollars we spent on this capture. There are many costs involved to apprehend a crook in deep cover after thirty years on the lamb. These are hours that could have been used to capture some younger bad guys that don’t use a walker. The cost to the people by the cops letting young criminals run about and do their evil cannot be calculated. There were no doubt murders, rapes, robberies, maybe terrorism. Weigh that against 500 pounds of Marijuana confiscated at the Canadian border 30 years ago. The captured culprit looked well financially and didn’t need to be catered to. Now we will pay his room and board and for all the health issues that will arise, for what? A long tamed fellow in his 70’s. I don’t want to support him; I am trying to support myself.
This stupidity and misuse of power and waste of money is discussing. We have twice the population in our prisons then what they were designed for. We have better things that should be done for the public safety. I say these type if incidences are criminal. All enforcement personnel are pledged to maintain the public welfare and safety. There is a billion bucks a year going down the sewer because of their illegal activities.
This whole thing reminds me of the chilling mystery and capture of Tommy Chong. His crime was manufacturing glass pipes and shipping them around the US to head shops. He was close to a geezer himself but he looked the same, headband, bushy hair, color clashing clothes, etc.
The Bush Jr. Administration decided we could not let Chong aid and abet our young people who where really tiring to just say no.  The F.B.I. had to catch Chong doing illegal interstate commerce because he was perfectly legal in his town. The Feds planed and plotted and came up with a scheme to nail the mastermind of interstate shipping. But Chong did not ship to any of the states that had a prohibition to glass pipes. So they set up a buyer who purchased the pipe shipment and ran over a state line and surprise she was busted right there. A despicable set up by our citizen defenders.
After 11 months and using over 25 cops, FBI, commerce agents, U.S. Marshals and an IRS accountant (see above for time lost damages) they finally got the maestro of Marijuana pipes. Jan 30, 2008, and boy did he have it coming, he got a whole year in one of the Feds finer suites. Possibly they were scared of him.  Maybe all Chong needs is a lawyer and he could own a block on Pennsylvania Ave.
